Use of TODO in Offshore Safety

Working in offshore environments is dangerous. Quite simply, this is an area with numerous high risks in day-to-day tasks, installation of apparatus, transportation to and from rigs and not forgetting the actual process of removing oil from deep under the Earth’s surface.

With all of the risks potentially affecting operators and staff in the offshore sector, never has it been more pertinent to focus on health and safety. In the UK, all rig workers must have valid offshore medical certificates and complete the BOSIET – the Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training programme. This program includes helicopter escape, personal survival, use of life crafts, first aid post evacuation, firefighting to name but a few. This practice of rig health and safety is reflected around the world.

The offshore industry has recognised the need for stringent health and safety procedures and this also boils down to the selection of materials and equipment to be used on the rig by the operators. Why have such strict regulations and procedures to then lower the bar by using an inferior product where it really matters?

TODO has been a major player in the offshore sector for decades. Specifically, the TODO-MATIC DRY-BREAK was developed to make line-to-line connection far easier and less time consuming than a simple flange-to-flange connection, or the alternative cam lock designs. When the male and female connectors are attached, the operator simply turns the female coupler clockwise through 110° to lock the connection and simultaneously commence fluid flow. The connection is sealed before fluid starts to flow, and the valves shut off before a disconnection can be made, meaning that there is relatively zero risk of leakage at disconnection and operator safety is maintained throughout.

Focussing on the prevention of accidents, TODO also offers Break-Aways that are designed to be installed in the flow line as a safe break-point in the line in the event of accidental pull-away or over-pressurisation. The specifically developed Marine Break-Away removes the effect of tidal and wave movements to protect the integral shear pins and ensure that the device is only activated by a straight-pull force (i.e. a vessel moving away from its mooring point prior to line disconnection). The Break-Away does two things:

  1. Ensures that in the event of an accidental pull-away, both sides of the line are shut off, preventing fluid from escaping into the sea or over the rig
  2. Provides protection to the overall installation or vessel by shearing before any force is experienced on critical components of the system

Perhaps as critical as the selection of products, regular maintenance is required to ensure that the products function effectively for many years.
