Air displacement pipettes use the same operating principles as hand-held electronic pipettes or manual pipettes.
The system picks up a pipette tip and then moves to a desired liquid reservoir. The pipette tip is immersed in a vessel containing a liquid. The liquid is then drawn into the pipette tip. The automated pipette is then moved to another container and the liquid is dispensed.
This technology helps to avoid cross-contamination of the samples and eliminates the risk of carryover.
TriContinent Air Displacement Pipette’s performance for automated pipette applications is as good as or better than the best handheld pipettes. Handheld pipettes typically utilize plastic pistons, which are subject to a much higher degree of tolerance variation and compliance in actuation.
TriContinent’s air displacement pipette pumps are constructed of high quality materials such as borosilicate glass, stainless steel, and inert polymers. These materials are manufactured with much lower tolerances compared to parts manufactured with injection molded plastic.
Aspiration and dispense volume accuracy is a function of bore and stroke accuracy. The inner diameter of TriContinent’s pipette pump barrel is held to an extremely low tolerance. This low tolerance allows for the incredible accuracy of TriContinent pipettes. Syringe inner diameter tolerances are commonly held to +/- 5 microns consistently along the entire length of the barrel.
