Multistage Centrifugal Blowers

Robuschi offers a full spectrum of low-pressure technologies, including lobe, screw, turbo and, now multistage centrifugal blowers.

Multistage centrifugal blowers are rotating machines that utilize the power of their electric motors to increase the velocity of the air or gas that passes through them. They help move air and gasses at a desired pressure to perform a specific function and are used in a wide range of industries.

Multistage blower technology is the perfect fit for a variety of air and gas applications requiring continual transfer and high flow rates. It is suitable for processes which involve the creation of relatively high pressures from small air/gas volumes. Multistage centrifugal blowers also allow for modulating the flow while maintaining a constant pressure.

Blowers are typically utilized in processes that have moderate pressure requirements. Their compression performance falls somewhere between that of fans and that of compressors.

The use of multistage centrifugal technology allows for the achievement of pressure levels higher than those which are produced by rotary lobe and regenerative blowers. Multistage centrifugal blowers are constant-volume devices. This means that at a constant speed they transfer a constant volume, rather than a constant mass of gas.

Such blowers are defined by their simple design. Their main elements include a fan housing, inlet and outlet ducts, a motor and a drive shaft, and fan wheels (impellers) with blades.

Multistage centrifugal blowers are durable and reliable, only requiring minimal maintenance and service. Their offer much versatility and flexibility when it comes to their operating range. Their constant and even air flow translates into energy savings and cost-efficient operation.

How Do Multistage Centrifugal Blowers Work?

Multistage centrifugal blowers generate centrifugal force that helps to accelerate the transfer and increase the pressure of the air or gas moving through the system.

The drive mechanism makes the impellers rotate. It can have a direct (the impellers and the drive shaft are directly linked) or an indirect (the energy is transmitted through a belt) configuration. The rotation pulls in ambient air or gas into the inlet. The air/gas is then sent through the ducted housing and discharged through the outlet at a different angle.

The centrifugal force boosts the kinetic energy of the gas particles. As a result, they leave the system at a much higher speed than the one at which they entered it. Due to the resistance offered by the system’s elements, the increase in speed results in an increase in pressure. It builds up as the air/gas goes through a number of stages.

How fast air or gas is transferred through the system largely depends on the type of the fan wheel. Different blade configurations (such as forward curved, backward inclined and radial) are used to meet the needs of different kinds of applications.

Where Are Multistage Centrifugal Blowers Used?

Multistage centrifugal blowers are used in a variety of applications with a requirement for transferring a large amount of air/gas at high pressure. They are utilized in:

  • Water & Wastewater Treatment – in applications including aeration, aerobic digestion, biogas, digester gas boosters, filter backwashing and air scouring
  • Industrial Processing – in applications including air drying, coal gasification, gas boosting, landfill gas, sulfur recovery and pulp dewatering
  • Engineered Vacuum Systems – in applications including flux recovery, dust collection, oral evacuation, pneumatic conveying, powder coating and quality control
