Air Displacement Pumps use the same operating principles as hand-held electronic pipettes by aspirating a medium from one vessel into a disposable tip and dispensing it into another vessel.
Features and Benefits
Air Displacement Pumps are working by displacing air in a reservoir by lowering a piston. By removing the piston from this reservoir a negative pressure is created which sucks the desired medium through a short tubing into a disposable tip. The medium is not supposed to get into the pump itself.
There are two ways to seal the piston against the cylinder. The simplest one is to use a so-called “static seal” where the seal is fixed and the piston is moving through this seal into the reservoir room.
The other way is to use a “dynamic seal” which is connected to the piston and moving up and down with the piston like in a syringe pump. This type is used in TriContinent Air Displacement pumps.
The Air Displacement pump is mounted typically on a robot arm which allows to move it over a platform where different vessels such as vials, tubes or micro plates are located which contains the reagents and samples. Typical applications are sample preparation, sample reformatting, dilution, Reaction set-up (e.g. for ELISA or PCR).
We provide different kinds of Air Displacement Pumps, the Air-Z Legacy and the Air-Z Premier.
The Air-Z Legacy is more or less the standard version which provides only aspiration and dispensing while the Air-Z Premier provides active tip drop, capacitive and pressure based liquid level detection (LLD), clogged tip detection and the option to monitor pressure curves which can be used for pipetting verification.
The Air-Z Premier has all necessary control and communication electronics on board.
