Mining & Construction

Reliable liquid ring pumps are found on vacuum filter applications, as well as for the critically important service of methane drainage. Compressed air is used in the mining and construction industry as the major source of motive energy since it is safe and reliable. Oil free and oil lubricated compressors are used for many breathing applications and air tool operation, as well as being used in larger quantities for conveying systems and ventilation.

Compressed air applications: portable compressors

Mobile or portable diesel driven air compressors are used in most mining and construction applications, providing air independently from electrical power supply. Whereas low pressure compressors are used for internal vibrators, suction excavators, pneumatic hammer, breaker, mole or rock drill applications, high pressure compressors are used for sandblasting, dry ice or soda blasting, operation of pneumatic DTH drill rigs, concrete conveying or spraying, fibre optic cable blowing, piling, ramming, paint spraying,…. Diesel driven air compressors are also commonly used as standby machines in industrial applications to protect against electricity failures.

  • Air operated tools – In general construction compressed air is used as an efficient way to operate pneumatic breakers, hammers and drills. Moling is a cost-efficient way to lay pipes below streets or railway lines without the need for digging trenches. Internal vibrators are used to settle down liquid concrete, removing air enclosures through constant vibrations.
  • Pneumatic drilling, ramming or piling machines – Compressed air is used with or without hydraulic power to operate drill rigs in stone and mineral quarries, mines, water wells, but also for ramming steel structures and piling road barriers.
  • Fibre optic cable blowing for telecom applications – Compressed air is used to blow cables with a high velocity airstream into existing pipes with cablejets or microjects, avoiding costly digging operations.
  • Concrete conveying or spraying – This is used at construction sites that are difficult to reach directly with concrete mixers, either because they are too remote or too high. Concrete spraying is used to fix rocky hills to avoid landslides, as well as being used in the construction of tunnels
  • Diesel driven standby compressors – Many factories are dependent on constant minimum air supply. As a protection against electrical power failures, diesel compressors can be installed to start automatically as soon as pressure drops in the factory’s pneumatic system. It is possible to equip the machines in such a way to permit operation in hazardous areas like refineries or offshore platforms.
  • Marine applications – Electrical or diesel-driven compressors are commonly used for installation on tankers in conjunction with nitrogen flooding systems. These systems minimize the risk of fires during unloading, loading and transport.
  • Blasting – Compressed air is used in the construction industry to clean ship hulls, oil tanks, bridges and steel constructions. For smaller or more delicate surfaces it is used in conjunction with dry ice or soda blasting units.
  • Bridge Cleaning – Portable compressed air is used to operate blasting pots to clean bridges
  • General construction work – Portable compressed air is used to drive a variety of compressed air tools on the construction site
  • Piling – Portable compressed air is used to under pin buildings for new foundations
  • Geothermal Drilling – Portable compressed air is used to drive drill rigs for this process of ground exploration

Compressed Air Applications: Stationary Compressors

Compressed air is used in the mining and construction industry as the major source of motive energy. As gases can be present in mining applications it is important that a safe and reliable energy source is selected, compressed air fits the bill. Oil free and oil lubricated compressors are used for many breathing applications and air tool operation, as well as being used in larger quantities for conveying systems and ventilation.

  • Air operated tools – Air is used as an ignition free medium to power tools down mines.
  • Fluidization of product – Compressed air is mixed with products such as coal dust to cause fluidization. This then make these products much easier for material handling and conveying
  • Reverse jet filtration cleaning – Compressed air is used for reverse air jet purging to keep filters clean and extend the lifetime and reduce downtime
  • Blasting – Compressed air is used as a safe medium heavy duty blasting in the construction industry
  • Ventilation systems – Used for safe operation of ventilation systems in hazardous mine environments

Methane Gas Extraction

Liquid ring vacuum pumps and compressors are the safest way to remove methane gas. The water ring in the pump eliminates the potential for explosion within the pump.

Vacuum Filter Applications: Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps

Dewatering of slurries is a typical application in the Mining / Minerals Industry, whether extracting alumina from bauxite, iron ore, phosphate, copper, titanium dioxide or coal. Liquid ring vacuum pumps are the standard where reliable vacuum is needed for rotary drum or belt filter applications.
